Jury Renders $4.7 Billion Verdict Against J&J

By Donald Loose

Last week, a jury in St. Louis found that Johnson & Johnson should pay $4.14 billion in punitive damages and $550 million in compensatory damages to 22 women and their families who blamed ovarian-cancer cases on asbestos in the company’s baby powder. This is the single biggest verdict in such cases so far. The company plans to appeal the verdict. J&J has been defending against more than 9,000 talcum powder lawsuits with mixed success.
