Last year, Arizonans bought more than 86,000 pounds of marijuana for medical purposes, according to a recent report from the Arizona Department of Health Services.
In December 2010, Arizona voters passed the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (AMMA), which took effect in April 2011. Marijuana is sold through more than 130 dispensaries throughout the state, to about 153,000 qualified patients. About 85% of medical marijuana patients report experiencing chronic pain. There are about 97,000 medical marijuana cardholders in Maricopa County and 21,000 in Pima County.
